Waste Levy information

On 1st December 2011, a waste levy will be introduced by the Queensland State Government. The levy is part of the State waste reform package, which is preceded by the Queensland’s Waste Reduction and Recycling Strategy 2010-2020 and the new Waste Reduction and Recycling Act 2011 passed by State parliament on 12 October 2011.

The new waste levy will be charged to landfill operators for applicable wastes that are disposed of to landfill. In most cases, the waste levy does not apply to recyclables and municipal waste.

The costs of the waste levy will be passed on by landfill operators to the generators of these wastes. The levy is designed to discourage businesses from sending waste to landfill and encourage alternative waste management options such as waste avoidance, reduction, recycling and recovery. The amended fees and charges will apply to Council landfill customers from 1 December 2011 onwards.

Separated recyclables and greenwaste do not attract the levy and Council recommends that businesses separate out all recyclables and recoverables where possible from their waste loads to minimise the impacts of the waste levy.
